PACIFIC SYMPOSIUM

Pain! The Other 4-Letter Word

Pain is one of the most complex and misunderstood phenomena in clinical practice — a multidimensional experience shaped by neurological, psychological, and social factors that extends far beyond simple tissue damage. This class offers all clinicians a rigorous exploration of contemporary pain science, including the mechanisms of central and peripheral sensitization, the role of the nervous system in chronic pain states, and how traditional and integrative modalities intersect with modern pain neuroscience.

Participants will leave with a deeper, evidence-informed understanding of why patients hurt and how to more effectively address pain in clinical practice. By bridging classical frameworks with current research, this course empowers practitioners to refine their clinical reasoning, broaden their therapeutic approach, and communicate more meaningfully with both patients and interdisciplinary colleagues about the nature and treatment of pain.

I am Placebo Positive

The placebo effect is no longer simply a methodological nuisance to be controlled for — it is a robust, neurobiologically grounded phenomenon with profound implications for clinical practice. This class provides clinicians with a thorough examination of the mechanisms underlying placebo and nocebo responses, including endogenous opioid pathways, expectation-driven neuroplasticity, and the therapeutic significance of the practitioner-patient relationship.

Drawing on current research in psychoneuroimmunology and clinical neuroscience, participants will explore how context, ritual, and therapeutic encounter actively modulate patient outcomes. Understanding placebo mechanisms not only enriches clinical effectiveness but also raises important ethical questions about informed consent and the intentional use of expectation in integrative care — questions this course addresses with both intellectual rigor and practical relevance.
